International Engine of the Year Awards 2008
Volkswagen TSI engines clean up in a double victory.

Class victory for 140 PS and 170 PS TSI's with twin charging

Second place for the newest 122 PS TSI in its first competition

Wolfsburg, 7 May, 2008 - The winning streak continues: for the third time, Volkswagen's dual charged TSI engines have won the "International Engine of the Year Award" in the category "1 litre to 1.4 litres". It is no coincidence that the 103 kW (140 PS) and 125 kW (170 PS) TSI's, which are charged by both a turbocharger and a supercharger, are among the most efficient petrol engines in the world. The motto for these engines is "maximum dynamics with minimum fuel consumption". And that's also how the jury, comprising 65 journalists from 32 countries, saw it. According to one jury member, 'This engine does everything right and fits into the most diverse types of vehicles.' Moreover, the new 122 PS TSI took second place in the same category in its first attempt. The "International Engine of the Year Awards 2008" will be presented today in Stuttgart.

Dr Rüdiger Szengel, Head of Petrol Engine Development, accepted the award for Volkswagen commenting, 'Our TSI engines have set the standard since their introduction in the performance class of 90 kW to 125 kW. They achieve new levels of economy for petrol engines while providing performance that offers real fun. We take it as a compliment to the entire development team that our TSI has won again in the displacement class to 1.4 litres.'

TSI engines are already powering diverse models in ten Volkswagen families. The petrol direct injection engines between 90 kW (122 PS) and 169 kW (230 PS) cover the entire range from Golf to the recently introduced Passat CC. What's more, the new Scirocco will be off to a running start in 2008 with TSI engines. In the 122 PS version, it requires only 6.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it one of the world's most economical sports cars.
New Passat R36 makes debut
The most powerful Passat ever produced is now on sale.

The new Passat R36, available in either saloon or estate bodystyles, is equipped with a naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre V6 engine developing 300 PS and 258 lbs ft of torque. Drive is channelled via a six-speed DSG gearbox through a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system capable of diverting torque to either axle depending on the grip available. As a result the saloon is capable of accelerating from rest to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds while the estate takes 5.8 seconds. Both models have limiters in place to restrict the top speed to 155 mph.

A set of 18-inch wheels housing Volkswagen 'R' blue brake callipers and a ride height lowered by 20 mm help distinguish the Passat R36 from the conventional vehicle. A new front bumper featuring a trio of deep airdams is joined by the distinctive chrome grille section inset into which is the 'R36 badge'. A set of Bi-Xenon headlight units complete the changes. At the rear a set of twin tailpipes, routed to either side of the bumper, compliment a subtle lip spoiler. The only badging comprises a simple 'R36' logo and the Volkswagen roundel.

The changes continue to the vehicle's interior. Unique front seats designed to offer greater lateral support are placed behind a sculpted sports steering wheel integrated into which are paddles for the DSG gearbox. A set of recalibrated 'R' dials are fitted alongside turned aluminium dashboard highlights, alloy pedals and sill plates bearing the 'R' logo.

Prices for new Passat R36 start at £30,990 on-the-road for the saloon and £32,150 for the estate model. Options include a choice of four colours ranging from silver to black, blue and grey. A further option of 19-inch wheels will also be offered at a later date.

As with the Golf R32 and Touareg R50 the Passat R36 was designed, engineered and developed by Volkswagen Individual. Established in 2003 and based in Wolfsburg, Individual is assigned with producing bespoke and highly focused vehicles such as the 'R' line-up as well as the BlueMotion range. The Passat R36 represents the fastest accelerating vehicle currently produced by Individual and Volkswagen.
Touareg gains power boost as new R50 model goes on sale
Volkswagen has revealed full details of its range-topping Touareg luxury 4x4 - the R50 - which offers customers more power and equipment, and boasts one of the most powerful diesel engines available on the market.

At the heart of the Touareg R50 is Volkswagen's award-winning 5.0-litre V10 TDI engine, uprated from 313 PS to produce 350 PS at 3,500 rpm. Beyond the power output, the R50's engine has also been given a substantial boost to produce an extra 100 Nm of torque: if the standard car's 750 Nm was more than enough to enable the Touareg to tow a Boeing 747, pulling power of an enormous 850 Nm (627 lbs ft) sets the R50 yet further apart from the crowd.

These figures translate into on road performance which would leave many hot hatches standing. The R50 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.7 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 146 mph. Compare this, for example, with the 'R' branded Golf, the R32, which goes to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds and has a 155 mph top speed. Yet, despite its extra punch the Touareg R50 has the same fuel economy and CO2 output as the standard V10 TDI (22.4 mpg combined and 333 g/km). Naturally the R50 benefits from standard 4XMOTION four-wheel drive which is channelled through a six-speed automatic gearbox. CDC (Continuous Damping Control) with sports modification which sees the car lowered by around 20 mm is also a standard feature on the R50.

Distinguishing the R50 from the previous range-topper, the Altitude V10 TDI, are a set of 21-inch 'Omanyt' ten-spoke alloy wheels as well as the Touareg 'R' design package. This includes at the back a body-coloured roof spoiler, restyled body-coloured bumper and oval tailpipe trims. Wheel arch extensions and blue brake callipers enhance the distinctive wheels, while at the front the R50 gains a matt chrome radiator grille and louvres as well as honeycomb-style inserts in the airdams.

Inside, and on top of the Altitude V10's already luxurious specification, the R50 has 'R' logos on the pedals, door sill protectors and Nappa leather sports seats, as well as heated outer rear seats, a ski sack and a net partition.

The R50 is priced at £61,885 (RRP OTR), representing a £3,885 premium over the Altitude V10 TDI. Prices for the Touareg range start at £29,880.

Only a limited number of Touareg R50s will be available for sale in the UK.
New Tiguan R-Line study unveiled ahead of UK launch
The new Volkswagen Tiguan compact 4x4 is set to go on sale in February powered by a choice of advanced new TSI petrol and common rail diesel engines. Just ahead of its arrival in the UK Volkswagen Individual has unveiled the Tiguan R-Line design study at the Essen Motor Show - a subtly aggressive styling exercise demonstrating the potential for a range-topping Tiguan.

Established in 2003 and based in Wolfsburg, Individual is an engineering department wholly owned by Volkswagen and is responsible for special projects including the Golf R32 and the BlueMotion range of vehicles.

Individual's influence on the Tiguan R-Line extends to a set of 19-inch multi-spoke wheels, a unique set of front and rear bumpers, subtle wheel arch extensions and colour-coded sills. The grille section is also new and features a pair of split chrome bars.

Inside the R-Line adds to the Tiguan's already extensive list of standard equipment. Unique sports seats and a flat bottomed multifunction steering wheel distinguish the R-Line from the conventional vehicle.

The standard Tiguan goes on sale in the UK in February powered initially by a choice of 150 PS TSI petrol and 140 PS, common rail, TDI diesel engines. In summer 2008 these will be joined by a new 170 PS TDI engine and a range-topping 200 PS TSI variant. All Tiguans feature the advanced Haldex 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

The R-Line model is likely to be sold in the UK as the new range-topping trim level similar to the popular Altitude line-up currently applied to the Touareg model. Prices for the standard Tiguan are set to start at £19,370 RRP on the road for the entry-level 1.4-litre TSI before rising to £23,750 for the 2.0-litre TDI model equipped with a six-speed Tiptronic gearbox.
New TSI engine adds power and punch to Volkswagen range
Volkswagen is replacing its 1.6-litre FSI petrol engine, which is popular across the Golf, Golf Plus, Jetta, Eos and Passat ranges, with a new 1.4-litre TSI unit to deliver more power and torque with reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Based on the original award-winning 1.4-litre TSI engine which combines a supercharger and a turbocharger to produce an impressive level of power from a small capacity engine, the new unit uses simply a sophisticated turbocharger. The result is an output of 122 PS - up from 115 for the 1.6-litre FSI engine it replaces - linked to a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox.

Torque is also increased substantially by nearly 30 per cent from 155 Nm (114 lbs ft) at 4,000 rpm to 200 Nm (155 lbs ft) delivered from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. The new engine also brings fuel saving benefits: the combined consumption on the Golf hatch, for example, has increased from 42.2 mpg for the outgoing 1.6-litre FSI to 44.8 mpg for the new 1.4-litre TSI. Carbon dioxide emissions are also reduced from 161 g/km to 149 g/km (139 for new DSG option).

Volkswagen's innovative new transverse seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox will be offered with this unit. Production for the DSG version will start at the beginning of 2008, while manual models are available to order now. The new unit will carry a retail premium of around £150 over the current 1.6-litre FSI; this rises to £175 for the Passat Saloon and Estate models, where the moderate price rise includes the addition of an autohold function for the parking brake which was previously a £50 option.
New Volkswagen Golf estate
Volkswagen have officially launched the third generation Golf Estate. Customers, who have been ordering the car since the start of June this year, will now be able to drive their new cars away from Volkswagen Retailers across the UK.

This latest generation of Golf Estate brings versatility and load-carrying ability to the Golf range. Loadspace is 505 litres with the seats in place, rising to a maximum of 1,550 litres when the rear seats are folded flat into the boot floor. A wide tailgate and low loading lip boost practicality while a chrome grille section - similar to the 'face' on the Eos - gives the new car an imposing and stylish appearance.

Three trim levels - S, SE and Sportline - and three engines - a 1.6-litre 102 PS petrol and 1.9-litre 105 PS and 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI units are available. Prices start at £14,347 RRP OTR for the entry-level S 1.6-litre and rise to £20,417 for the 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS with DSG and DPF (diesel particulate filter).
Volkswagen Group sells more than three million vehicles
Record deliveries: Volkswagen Group sells more than three million vehicles world-wide in first half of 2007.

Gain of 7.8 percent over same period last year.

Wolfsburg, July 12, 2007 - The Volkswagen Group delivered 3.09 million vehicles to customers throughout the world in the first six months of 2007, an all-time sales record for the company for the first half of a year. This corresponds to an increase of 7.8 percent over the same period last year.

Group deliveries from January through June 2007 in Europe rose by 3.7 percent to 1.86 million vehicles, 1.62 million of which went to Western Europe (1.3 percent increase). This more than makes up for the 3.7 percent decline in Germany, the largest single market, where 515,000 vehicles were delivered. The 238,000 vehicles sold in Central and Eastern Europe produced an increase of 22.8 percent.

The Volkswagen Group sold 502,000 vehicles in the Asian-Pacific region, 20.9 percent more than in the first half of last year. The deliveries in China alone grew by 24.6 percent to 431,000 vehicles.

Sales developed positively in the first half of the year on the American continents as well. The Group's deliveries to customers in South America rose by 27.7 percent to 339,000 cars, of which 260,000 went to Brazil, generating 28.6 percent growth there. In North America, the sale of 263,000 vehicles produced a rise of 3.1 percent, whereby the USA registered 2.8 percent growth with 163,000 vehicles.

Volkswagen brand, the largest-volume member of the Group, delivered 1.8 million vehicles in the first half of this year to customers throughout the world, 7.4 percent more than in the same period last year. Audi likewise registered a substantial growth of 9.8 percent in sales and 509,000 deliveries. Skoda made a powerful gain of 13.2 percent with 311,000 cars. Seat delivered 222,000 vehicles, registering a slight decline of 1.8 percent. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles significantly increased sales by 8.4 percent to 233,000. Bentley made as strong gain of 18.8 percent to more than 5,600 cars sold; with 1,200 sales, Lamborghini grew by 29.7 percent; and Bugatti by 131.3 percent to 37 cars.
VW unveils new Tiguan comapct 4X4 model
Volkswagen has revealed the first images of its Tiguan, the new compact 4x4 which will go on sale in the UK in February 2008, following its world public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Concept Tiguan made its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show last year.

Slightly larger than the Volkswagen Touran compact MPV, the Tiguan is 4.4 m long, 1.8 m wide and 1.6 m in height. It has a purposeful appearance which reinforces its strong links to its 'big brother', the Touareg, with raised suspension, large tyres and true 4x4 styling cues.

In the UK, the Tiguan will initially be available with two engines - a 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI diesel which is likely to be the most popular model, and a 1.4-litre 150 PS TSI petrol unit. Later in 2008 a 170 PS TDI and two further petrol engines will become available to order. Both diesel engines meet the stringent Euro 5 emissions standard that comes into effect in 2009.

S, SE and Sport models will be offered at launch, all with 4MOTION four-wheel drive and an 18 degree angle of approach, a figure that defines the size of obstruction the vehicle can drive over. Customers requiring additional off-road capability can choose a 28 degree angle of approach front end. This model comes with a radiator protection grille, underbody protection, hill descent control and a compass.

UK pricing is expected to start at around £19,000.
Volkwagen introduces new Golf GT Sport trim
Volkswagen is set to replace the existing Golf Sport and GT trim levels with a single all-new model - the Golf GT Sport.

The Golf GT Sport debuts a purposeful new look as well as additional equipment over the models it replaces to deliver greater value. An all-new darkened grille section is intersected by a set of horizontal fins to forge a visual link with the other sporting models in the range - the potent GTI and R32 variants. Inset into the grille is a new 'GT Sport' badge. Framing the new nose are a pair of darkened headlights which visually separate the lenses into four, individual units. They sit above a set of fog lights mounted in the front air dams.

In profile the new GT Sport is distinguished by subtle tints to the rear windows and a set of 17-inch multi-spoke 'ClassiXs' alloy wheels fitted with 225/45 R17 tyres.

At the rear twin chrome exhausts on the 170 PS models are joined by discreet 'GT Sport' badges.

The subtle, sporting look continues inside. A leather-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake are fitted along with front sports seats, automatic light sensing headlights and rain sensing windscreen wipers. This is in addition to Climatic air conditioning, a CD stereo system with eight speakers and electric windows. Six airbags, ABS and Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) round off the high levels of standard equipment.

The purposeful exterior is backed up by dynamic underpinnings. The innovative 1.4-litre TSI engine which utilises both a supercharger and a turbocharger to generate high power outputs from a modest engine capacity while retaining high levels of economy is available in 140 PS and 170 PS guises. A single 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine is also available in 140 PS and 170 PS outputs. Both petrol and diesel engines are available mated to a choice of six-speed manual or DSG transmissions.

The new Golf GT Sport will be available in both three- and five-door bodystyles when deliveries start later in the summer. It joins the existing S and Match trim levels in the Golf model range. Prices are set to start at £17,422 for the entry-level three-door variant specified with a 1.4-litre TSI 140 PS engine, rising to £21,352 for the five-door model fitted with the 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS engine with DSG transmission.
Volkswagen unveils Golf GTI W12-650 design study
Volkswagen has unveiled a unique design study which is set to feature at the largest GTI festival in Europe this week. The GTI W12-650 mates a Golf GTI three-door bodyshell to a bespoke mid-mounted bi-turbo W12 650 PS engine channelling drive to the rear wheels.

Not only is it the most powerful Golf ever produced by Volkswagen but it's also the fastest. The sprint from standstill to 62 mph takes 3.7 seconds. A potential maximum speed of 201.8 mph is made possible through a 70 mm lower ride height and the extensive use of under floor aerodynamic aids including a diffuser negating the need for a large rear wing to keep the vehicle pinned to the ground at very high speeds.

At the vehicle's heart is a bespoke mid-mounted W12 engine linked to a pair of turbochargers. In order to make the installation possible Volkswagen engineers created a unique aluminium subframe onto which the engine could be mounted. The engine's cooling systems are fed by a pair of side-mounted cooling vents placed in the airflow just ahead of the rear wheels.

The 5,998 cc W12 engine is an evolution of the 450 PS version fitted to the Phaeton. The engine is made from aluminium to reduce weight further and features four valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts per cylinder head. Extremely compact in design, measuring only 513 mm in length, 715 mm in height and 710 mm in breadth, it's effectively made up of a pair of narrow-angle V6 engines laid alongside each other. The engine is linked to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. With the fitment of a pair of turbochargers power rises to 650 PS at 6,000 rpm while peak torque is capped at 553 lbs ft delivered at 4,500 rpm making it over three times more powerful than the conventional Golf GTI.

A 160 mm gain in width over the standard GTI is designed to accommodate the mid-mounted engine, bespoke drivetrain and the side-mounted cooling systems. The roof is constructed out of carbon fibre and features an integrated cooling scoop to channel air into the rear-mounted radiators. The redesigned floating C-pillars further aid the cooling systems to feed air into the engine.

The purposeful new stance is further emphasised by a set of 19-inch wheels styled to mimic the standard wheels fitted to the Golf GTI but, in the case of the GTI W12-650 wrapped in 295-profile tyres to aid traction.

The GTI W12-650 is a bespoke design study built by Volkswagen to mark the annual GTI festival in Worthersee, Austria. The event, the biggest of its kind in Europe, sees fans congregate to pay homage to the GTI, now in its fifth generation and celebrating its 30 th anniversary in the UK.
Tiguan set to make world debut on the web
Volkswagen is launching an internet microsite for the hotly-anticipated Tiguan, allowing a web-based audience access to exclusive images and information three months ahead of the compact 4x4's public world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year.

Registering at www.volkswagen.co.uk/tiguan will allow users entry to the 'Tiguan Base' site. Set to feature images of the car's final shape when it's unveiled in June, the site will expand in the lead up to launch with information and insights into the development of the vehicle.

Concept Tiguan made its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show last year. Powered by a BlueTec diesel engine, Concept Tiguan is fitted with an advanced nitrogen oxide trap converter designed to reduce the oxides emitted by up to 90 per cent over current diesel units. Eye-catching details include a unique set of 19-inch Continental tyres complete with interwoven orange tread and a bespoke interior featuring distressed leather detailing. Measuring 4.4 metres in length, 1.85 m in width and a compact
1.6 m high the Concept Tiguan is similar in size to the Touran compact MPV.

The Tiguan name was the result of a poll of more than 350,000 readers of magazines in the AutoBild group.

Sales of the Tiguan in the UK are expected to start in 2008 with prices and specifications being announced nearer the time.
Prices of new Touareg announced ahead of March launch
The new Touareg is now available to order ahead of its arrival in showrooms on
1 March 2007. With a host of new technologies and fresh styling Touareg prices
will start from £29,465 on the road RRP for the 2.5-litre TDI 174 PS with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) before rising to £57,535 for the range-topping Altitude 5.0-litre V10 TDI DPF.

Over 2,300 individual parts were replaced in the comprehensive range of changes made to the new Touareg. Among the most noticeable of these is the adoption of the new Volkswagen 'face' first seen on the Eos coupe cabriolet. The Touareg benefits from a new grille section, reprofiled headlights framing a new bumper and a pair of aerodynamic wing mirrors. At the rear the light clusters are replaced by distinctive new units featuring two pronounced circular lenses. More subtle is the mildly revised rear bumper along with new tail pipes. The changes continue inside where the interior features new leather finishes and redesigned front seats which are joined by a refreshed instrument panel incorporating a new multifunction display. An option
new to the Touareg is the powerful 620 watt Dynaudio stereo system.

The new Touareg builds on the previous model's reputation for technological and engineering prowess and marks the debut of exciting new technologies under the skin. Chief among these is the new ABSPlus system which, through working with the Touareg's ABS, can cut braking distances by up to 20 per cent on loose or muddy surfaces. When applied to the V10 TDI model the system is linked to a set of powerful new Brembo brakes to haul the Touareg to a stop with even greater conviction. Building further on the Touareg's substantial list of safety equipment is the option of Front Scan. This system uses a series of sensors linked to Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to scan the road ahead for any dangers and can - if necessary - slow the vehicle to a complete halt. This is a first in the Touareg's segment.

Side Scan, another new technology, senses the area next to the vehicle and acts as a lane changing aid by lighting a small warning lamp in the wing mirrors to warn of the danger of collision.

The Touareg's ability off-road is boosted by the addition of new rollover sensors. The system scrutinises vehicle acceleration, yaw angle and yaw speeds. Should the system detect that a rollover is imminent the head / thorax airbags are automatically deployed to reduce the risk of injury.

Three versions of the new vehicle will be offered comprising Touareg, SE and Altitude. As with the previous model the Touareg is fitted with a comprehensive range of standard equipment including 4XMOTION permanent four-wheel drive, air conditioning, a CD player coupled to ten speakers, hill start and descent assist, six airbags and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme.)

The engine line-up remains unchanged with the option of a single petrol 3.6-litre V6 280 PS or the choice of three diesel engines in 2.5-litre TDI DPF 174 PS, 3.0-litre TDI 225 PS or 5.0-litre V10 TDI DPF 310 PS guises. The 3.6-litre V6, 3.0-litre TDI and 5.0-litre V10 TDI engines are all fitted with six-speed automatic gearboxes as standard while the 2.5-litre TDI retains a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with the option of an automatic gearbox.

Since its launch in May 2003 the Touareg has proved a hit with UK buyers seeking a mix of off-road versatility combined with sharp on-road dynamics and comfort. Over 10,500 vehicles have been sold in the UK alone, nearly half of which are specified in top-of-the range Altitude trim.

New Touran available to order now ahead of January launch
Volkswagen has announced prices for its new Touran and released the car for ordering ahead of the on sale date of 5 January 2007. Prices start at £14,750 on the road RRP for the entry-level S 1.6-litre 102 PS and rise to £23,310 for the range-topping Sport 2.0-litre TDI DPF 170 PS with DSG gearbox.

As part of a comprehensive revision, Volkswagen's compact MPV gains new styling, engines and technology, while building on the virtues of the successful current seven-seater Touran. A fresh Volkswagen 'face' is adopted for the new Touran, with revised lights similar to those on the Eos coupe cabriolet as well as a new bumper and grille section. At the rear, the lights and bumper have also been modified and updated to give a fresh and modern look. Inside, the Touran gains new trim and materials, including a stainless steel finish to the dials and upgraded standard equipment.

The Touran was always renowned for its safety features, and the new model takes this a step further. It is fitted as standard with front, side and head airbags as well as ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) with a counter-steering feature which can reduce stopping distances by up to ten per cent.

Another innovation is ParkAssist which uses a series of sensors mounted on the front, rear and side of the Touran to plot the ideal manoeuvring path into a parallel space either to the right or left of the vehicle. Once engaged the system, through audible warnings and visual displays, carries out the necessary steering inputs while the driver simply controls the throttle and brake inputs. The whole operation takes less than 15 seconds. This feature will become an option from spring.

The model line-up remains as before with S, SE and Sport. All models have - among a host of items - 15-inch alloy wheels, CD player, air conditioning, remote control central locking and cruise control; SE adds 16-inch alloy wheels, alarm and body-coloured trims; Sport gains CD autochanger, tinted glass from the B-pillar back, aluminium interior trim and rear parking sensors as standard.

A new engine line-up comprises six units - two petrol and four diesel. These are the 1.6-litre 102 PS; 1.4-litre TSI 140 PS with optional DSG gearbox; 1.9-litre TDI 90 and 105 PS; 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS with optional DSG; and 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and optional DSG. Over 85 per cent of Touran buyers will opt for a diesel engine, with the best-selling model expected to be the S 1.9-litre TDI 105 PS, priced at £16,275.

Since its launch in August 2003, the Touran has been extremely successful with over 37,000 units sold. It competes in the compact MPV sector which accounted for around 210,000 units in 2005. The Touran continues to be produced at the Wolfsburg factory in Germany. Volkswagen UK expects to sell around 10,750 Tourans in a year.
Volkswagen unveils the new Passat R36
Volkswagen is set to release its most potent 'R' model yet - the Passat R36. Joining the Golf R32 and only the second model in the Volkswagen line-up to carry the 'R' badge the new car will be not only the fastest Passat but also the fastest estate car Volkswagen has ever produced.

The basis for the R36 is a new 3.6-litre FSI V6 engine developing 300 PS. It's mated to an ultra-responsive, six-speed DSG gearbox channelling drive through all four wheels to maximise traction. At each corner are revised springs and dampers linked to uprated brake discs and callipers to add more bite under heavy deceleration.

Clothing the mechanical changes is a bespoke bodykit which at the front incorporates a trio of deep airdams drawing a family resemblance with the Golf R32. Deep sideskirts and chrome highlights are framed by unique 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/40 R18 tyres. At the rear a deeper bumper houses a pair of chrome-tipped tailpipes and revised light lenses. The estate version features a discreet spoiler on the trailing edge of the rear window.

Gripping the driver and front seat passenger are a set of sculpted sports seats bearing the R36 logo. The dashboard is finished in brushed aluminium panels set into which are a set of unique dials joined by a sports steering wheel and bespoke 'R' polished pedals.

Equipment levels, as with the standard Passat, remain high with ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), Xenon headlights, 2Zone electronic climate control, a heated windscreen and seats, six airbags and a radio/CD player.

The R36 takes its place as the fastest production Passat with a claimed 0 to 62 mph time of 5.6 seconds. The estate version which, like the saloon, is fitted with 4MOTION all-wheel drive returns a time of 5.8 seconds. Both are electronically limited to maximum of 155 mph.

The Passat R36 makes its public debut at the Essen Motorshow on November 30th. Prices will be announced closer to the UK launch in 2007.
More equipment and less moneyfrom the new Golf Match
Volkswagen has launched a fresh new trim level for the Golf range - the all-new Match - promising greater value and even more standard equipment than the SE model it replaces. On sale now, the Match is packed with useful functional and aesthetic additions and costs from £14,995 RRP on the road - a saving of £380 over the outgoing SE.

Leading the changes are all-new 15 'Canberra' ten-spoke alloy wheels joined by body-coloured bumpers, side rubbing strips and door handles. The interior benefits from a three-spoke, leather trimmed steering wheel incorporating controls for the new multifunction computer and stereo. Owners of iPod MP3 or USB music storage devices benefit from a handy link cable hidden in the new centre armrest to mate the portable players to the eight-speaker CD stereo system.

To specify these items on an SE model would have cost upwards of £720. Combined with the £380 price reduction, this means the Match customer gains a substantial £1,100 of extra value. This is on top of the Golf's already extensive list of standard equipment which includes ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), twin front, side and curtain airbags and remote central locking with alarm.

Powering the Golf Match is a choice of advanced petrol or diesel engines. The 1.6-litre FSI petrol engine developing 115 PS can be mated to a choice of six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes while the 1.9-litre TDI diesel unit producing 105 PS is coupled to a five-speed manual or an optional six-speed, DSG gearbox.

The Match is expected to be a hit with UK buyers and is likely to account for over a third of all Golf models sold. As with the SE model the new Match will be available in a five-door bodystyle only and slots into the range between the S and Sport trim levels. This year alone over 38,000 Golfs have been sold in the UK.

New Touareg breaks cover ahead of world debut at Paris show
Volkswagen has revealed the first photographs of its new Touareg luxury 4x4, ahead of its world public debut at the Paris Motor Show next week.

Sporting a new 'face', revised rear styling, updated interior and seats as well as the Dynaudio sound system as an option, the new Touareg will go on sale in the UK at the end of January 2007.

At the front, the new Touareg features a new grille, bonnet, front wings and bumper, plus new headlights and mirrors. The rear lights, spoiler, bumper and exhaust pipes have also been modified to freshen the 4x4's appearance.

The new Touareg will feature new and revised technology, including ABSPlus and additional ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) features. ABSPlus has been developed and patented by Volkswagen and is a world first. The system shortens the braking distance by up to 20% on loose driving surfaces. New features have been added to the ESP, these include Active Rollover Protection (ARP), rain brake support, fading brake support and understeer control logic, which improves the turning behaviour in the event of understeer.

The UK line-up will remain as before with three trim levels - Touareg, SE and Altitude - all of which boast high levels of standard specification and trim.

Four engines will be available: one petrol and three diesel. These are a 3.6-litre V6 280 PS petrol; 2.5-litre TDI 174 PS with DPF (diesel particulate filter); 3.0-litre V6 TDI 225 PS with or without DPF; and the range-topping 5.0-litre V10 TDI with 313 PS and DPF. The 2.5-litre TDI will be available as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox and optional Tiptronic automatic transmission. All other engines will be mated to the six speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

The current Touareg model went on sale in the UK in May 2003. The car is designed to deliver class-leading performance both on and off the road. Features such as permanent four-wheel drive, low and high gear ratios, electronic traction control linked to an auto-locking centre differential, hill start and descent assist and short front and rear overhangs all contribute to class-leading capability when venturing off the beaten track. Extremely steep slope angles are within the Touareg's capability, and versions with air suspension can ford depths of up to 580 mm.

Since launch, over 10,500 Touaregs have been sold in the UK.
Less is more with Volkswagen's new TSI engine
EurotaxGlass's Market Intelligence Unit has recently undertaken an assessment of the Volkswagen Group's revolutionary new 1.4-litre TSI engine. The research was carried out to establish how the diminutive new engine is likely to perform within the UK market.

Traditionally the market is sceptical of small capacity engines when installed in anything other than 'supermini' sized vehicles. The perception of a mid-sized car fitted with a 1.4-litre engine is that of a somewhat underpowered vehicle with correspondingly indifferent fuel-consumption. Additionally, such cars have a poor image and remain relatively unloved on the used car market. A study of the new VW TSI 'Twincharger' engine looks set to transform those deep-rooted opinions and it is the opinion of EurotaxGlass's that this engine represents something of a revolution within the market place.

Scheduled to make its first appearance under the bonnet of the VW Golf, the new engine produces up to 170 PS with outstanding torque characteristics. Significantly, the power, torque and performance figures of the TSI all out-perform those achieved by VW's existing 2.0-litre FSI engine. These unique characteristics also provide a combined fuel-economy figure of 38.2 mpg, a figure that also improves upon that achieved by the 2.0-litre FSI engine.

Traditionally, downsizing turbocharged engines has led to unacceptable levels of turbo 'lag', but the combination of combined turbo and supercharging has eliminated these issues and the engine heralds a new era for small, lightweight engines. The fact that the TSI engine provides arguably the best all-round combination of characteristics in terms of power, economy, performance and price within the entire

Golf range has led EurotaxGlass's to consider the engine's prospects for commercial success very seriously.

This engine will force the market to reconsider the merits of small capacity engines, says Alan Cole, Editor of EurotaxGlass's Market Intelligence Unit. Clearly consumers now have a real alternative to the larger, heavier and less economical petrol engines.

He continues: This engine also has the real prospect of taking some share of the ever-increasing diesel market. Diesels command a significant price-premium over petrol variants, but many consumers do not cover sufficient mileage to ever recoup that investment through improved fuel economy. The TSI unit has a low CO2 rating which provides a 'benefit in kind' tax rating below that of many diesel cars, while the combination of competitive pricing and good economy may for many stack the odds in favour of the petrol car.

Unusually for a petrol engined derivative, the residual value forecast for the TSI is predicted to be worth a higher percentage of the original cost new when compared to the equivalent diesel engined version.

The utilization of new technology that enables the downsizing of engines to more efficiently-sized units is likely to be an industry trend that we see more of in coming years, concludes Cole.
Sun shines on EOS launch date
14th July marks the official launch date of the Eos, Volkswagen's new coupe/cabriolet. Customers, over 1000 of whom have already ordered the car since prices were revealed in February, can now put the roof down, drive the car out of the showroom and enjoy their new cars.

The Eos combines the benefits of a full convertible and a hard-top coupe. It is unique in its class, being the only convertible with a tilt and slide sunroof fitted as standard. The folding hard-top is made-up of five parts, enabling the roof to fold neatly into the boot, occupying minimum space. The roof function is neat and efficient: opening or closing takes just 25 seconds.

Two trim levels are available: standard and Sport. All models feature ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), and twin front and combined curtain and side impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Semi-automatic air conditioning, fog lights, electric windows, electric heated and adjustable wing mirrors, radio/CD player, 16 alloy wheels, parking sensors and lockable load through provision are also standard. Moving up the range, Sport trim adds 17 alloys, sports suspension, upgraded audio player, aluminium-look pedals, decorative aluminium dash inserts and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The Eos is offered with a choice of five engines: four petrol and one diesel. These include the 1.6-litre FSI 115 PS; 2.0-litre FSI 150 PS; 2.0-litre T-FSI 200 PS; 3.2-litre V6 250 PS; and 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while the 200 PS petrol and the TDI will be offered later in the year with Volkswagen's innovative DSG automatic gearbox; this 'box is standard with the V6 engine.

Prices start at £19,370 on the road for the 1.6-litre, and rise to £28,095 for the 3.2-litre V6. Volkswagen EOS microsite launched
With just over a month to go before the launch of the Eos coupe cabriolet, Volkswagen has revealed a new website for potential buyers, allowing them to experience the new car in an innovative way, as well as customise and select their own vehicle ahead of the on-sale date of 14 July.

The website can be accessed via the main Volkswagen site (www.volkswagen.co.uk) or direct at www.rediscoveryoursenses.co.uk. This rather unusual domain name sums up the aim of the Eos: to allow drivers to reawaken and rediscover their senses by driving an open-top car.

Visitors to the site will be able to use the latest online interactive technology, previously only available through the likes of PlayStation and Xbox, to 'drive' the Eos through a three-dimensional interactive sensory world of sights, sounds and product information that extend the creative landscapes of the television and print launch advertising. The result is a completely new kind of online experience in the car market that lets people discover the new Eos in the way that suits them.

Interactive agency, Tribal DDB London, pushed the boundaries of technology to enable the site to function in a way that sets it apart from the majority of online advertisements.

In addition to the 'sensory world', potential buyers can configure their own customised vehicles, choosing colours, accessories and engines which can then be turned into an order and taken to their local Volkswagen Retailer; register their interest in the car to receive news updates leading up to launch; and request a test drive via their Retailer.

When it goes on sale in July, the Eos will be the only coupe cabriolet to feature a five-part fully electric roof and integrated sunroof. Prices start at £19,410 for the entry-level 1.6-litre FSI 115 PS.
Range-topping Polo GTI in Volkswagen showrooms
The new Volkswagen Polo GTI is officially launched 12th May 2006, completing the Polo range renewal and adding extra excitement to the model line-up.

The range-topping Polo went on sale in February when prices were announced and customers have been placing orders for the car since then.

Available in both three- and five-door guise, the Polo GTI is equipped with the proven 1.8-litre 20 valve turbocharged engine. In the GTI it develops 150 PS and 162 lbs ft (220 Nm) of torque from just 1,950 right up to 4,500 rpm, making for the most powerful production Polo ever. The GTI accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.2 seconds, and goes on to a top speed of 134 mph.

Style-wise, the Polo GTI takes cues from its 'big brother' Golf GTI and features a honeycomb front grille; twin tail pipes; red brake callipers; 15 mm lower suspension; and 16 versions of the GTI alloy wheel. Prices for the Polo GTI start at £14,810 'on the road' for the three-door model, with a £600 premium for the five-door model.

The GTI features a high level of standard equipment including: ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme); driver's and front passenger's airbags; and front side airbags. Other items include Climatic semi-automatic air conditioning; remote central locking with alarm; electric windows and mirrors; and a radio/CD player.

Around 80 per cent of new cars are purchased with some form of finance or borrowing. The financial services arm of the Volkswagen Group, Volkswagen Finance, supports the retailer network with a range of finance and insurance products including its flexible personal contract plan, Solutions. The combination of brand values and flexibility of Solutions could ensure that a customer gets more Volkswagen for their motoring budget.
Launch of Beetle Art
Just in case buyers thought the styling of the New Beetle and New Beetle Cabriolet wasn't quite distinctive enough... Volkswagen is pleased to announce the introduction of a range of decals allowing them to customise their vehicles further.

Called Beetle Art, the new portfolio comprises four designs created by artists and illustrators, and is aimed at those looking for something a little more distinctive and individual.

Jamie Cullen's 'Mud Splats' features an intricate montage of birds, lions and flowers within the shape of muddy sprays on the side of the car, and was inspired by the theory that dirt on a car can look beautiful.

Wallpaper specialist Mibo has had her products in high-end department stores such as Liberty and Habitat, and has designed a bold bird and flower pattern for the New Beetle, called 'Taking Flight'.

For something a little more colourful, customers could opt for Steve Wilson's 'Chasing Rainbows' which is a compilation of rainbows, butterflies and flowers in psychedelic pinks, greens and yellows.

Finally, the Dutch surrealist artist, Parra, has developed a unique 'It's All Mine' design to reinforce the 'love affair' owners have with their New Beetles, comprising hearts and the word 'Mine' along the side panels.

Each of the four designs can be purchased from a Volkswagen UK retailer as a whole or for individual body panels to create a subtle or bolder look. Prices start from £45 (inc VAT and fitting) for an individual front or rear panel, and rise to £220 (inc VAT and fitting) for a full set.

A new microsite has been launched at www.beetleart.co.uk where prospective customers can configure their desired car in a colour, bodystyle and with a design of their choice.

Research shows that 47 per cent of New Beetle drivers strongly agree with the statement 'I like cars with distinctive styling' compared with only 20 per cent of all drivers. Similarly 31 per cent of Beetle owners want their car to be an expression of their personality, which contrasts with just eight per cent of all drivers.

The decals themselves are made of durable long-lasting vinyl and are guaranteed for three years. Once fitted they can be treated as normal paintwork, though jet washing is not advised. At resale or when the customer wishes to change the look of the car they can be removed without the paintwork being affected.
Volkswagen Fox is unleashed today
28th April 2006 marks the official launch date of the Fox, Volkswagen's new entry level model. Customers, who have been ordering the Fox since January this year, will now be able to drive their new cars away from Volkswagen Retailers across the UK.

The Fox is designed to give customers exceptional space in a high-value, high-quality package. At 3.83 metres, the Fox is longer than the Lupo it replaces, but shorter than a Polo. Within a height of 1.54 metres it can accommodate four large adults, or two occupants plus one cubic metre of luggage with the rear seats folded.

It is offered with three doors, a choice of two petrol engines - a 1.2-litre 55 PS and a 1.4-litre 75 PS - and in two trim levels. The entry level Fox benefits from power steering, a CD player, ABS, twin airbags and, with the 1.2-litre engine, the lowest possible insurance rating - 1E. The higher specification Urban Fox gains extra equipment and trim.

The Fox harnesses traditional Volkswagen values of low cost of ownership and durability, with a galvanised steel body and extensive use of laser welding. A sliding rear bench seat is standard in the Urban Fox and optional on the Fox - it can be moved through 15 cms lengthways and is split 50:50. Surprisingly, the new Volkswagen Fox is larger and lower priced than the Lupo model it replaces. Prices start at £6,590 (OTR RRP) for the 1.2-litre and £7,395 for the 1.4-litre. In Urban trim, prices are £7,190 for the 1.2-litre and £7,995 for the 1.4-litre.

Helping drivers to get on the road, from launch until 30 September 2006, Volkswagen Finance is offering all retail customers who purchase a Fox with a Solutions finance package free servicing for three years or 30,000 miles (whichever comes sooner).

The free servicing package comprises lubrication service at 10,000 miles or 12 months; inspection service at 20,000 miles or 24 months; and a lubrication service at 30,000 miles or 36 months.

Two full examples of the Fox Launch Campaign - a £1,560.37 deposit and £89.00 per month option and a £135.00 deposit followed by £135.00 per month alternative:
Volkswagen launches petrol revolution with TSI technology
Following the success of its TDI and FSI engines, Volkswagen is launching the latest in a line of pioneering inventions with the introduction of TSI petrol technology.

FSI uses direct injection to improve combustion efficiency and hence reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Taking this further, TSI uses - for the first time ever -
an FSI engine which is then dual-charged through a combination of an engine driven supercharger and an exhaust gas turbocharger arranged in series.

The driving characteristics of the new TSI engine are improved over those of the current FSI unit. The belt-driven supercharger operates at lower engine speeds, with the turbocharger coming in as the engine speed increases. The result of this is excellent driveability and performance throughout the range with no turbo lag and high maximum torque.

The new TSI engine has a capacity of 1.4-litres (1390 cc) and produces either 140 or 170 PS. The 170 PS version has the same peak power as a conventional 2.3-litre petrol unit but with 20 per cent lower fuel consumption, returning 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle. It also produces impressive torque of 177 lbs ft (240 Nm) from 1,750 through to 4,500 rpm.

The combination of these technologies enables a small capacity engine with a high compression ratio to cruise at part load on high gearing to combine dramatic performance with exceptional fuel consumption for a petrol engine.

At the same time, the Golf line-up will be joined by a new 2.0-litre TDI engine producing 170 PS - the most potent diesel-powered unit ever produced for a Golf.

A development of the popular 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI engine, this new powerplant uses Piezo electric elements to control precisely the fuel injection, thus maximising power output but minimising consumption and emissions. Emissions are further reduced by a maintenance-free particulate filter.

Maximum torque of 258 lbs ft (350 Nm) is available from 1,750 rpm. A top speed of 137 mph and 0-62 mph in just 8.2 seconds mean strong performance, yet combined consumption of 46.3 mpg guarantees little time and money spent at the pumps.

These new petrol and diesel engines have prompted a revision in the Golf line-up. The existing GT trim will be altered to look more like the GTI, gaining a new front grille, GT badges, 17 'ClassiX' alloy wheels, lowered suspension (by 15 mm) and twin exhaust pipes. Both the 2.0-litre 140 and 170 PS TDI engines as well as the 1.4-litre 170 PS TSI petrol will be offered in GT trim. Prices will start at £17,995 for the 140 PS TDI; £19,095 for the 170 PS TDI; and £18,095 for the 170 PS TSI. Further down the range, the Sport trim will now be available with the 1.4-litre TSI 140 PS (£15,995),

2.0-litre 105 PS TDI (£16,025) and 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI (£17,320) units.

The revised Golf range will be available to order from 21 April. Volkswagen Retailers can provide a service to customers interested in purchasing with finance through the financial services arm of the Volkswagen Group, Volkswagen Finance*. Around 80 per cent of new cars are now bought with some form of finance or borrowing. Volkswagen Finance supports the Retailer network with a range of finance and insurance products including its flexible personal contract plan, Solutions. Such plans could ensure that a customer gets more Volkswagen for their motoring budget.
Look ahead to summer with Volkswagen's Eos convertible coupe
It's time to banish those mid-winter blues and look ahead to warmer days: the Eos, Volkswagen's new convertible coupe, is available to order now ahead of launch during July, with prices starting at £19,385.

The four-seater Eos combines the benefits of a full convertible and - for when the sun doesn't shine - a hard-top coupe. Yet it is unique in its class, being the only convertible coupe with a tilt and slide sunroof fitted as standard.

The folding hard-top is made-up of five parts, enabling the roof to fold neatly into the boot, occupying minimal space. With the roof closed, boot capacity is 380 litres; with the roof 'off', luggage space is 205 litres.

And at the top of the line-up, 17 'Westwood' alloy wheels, Vienna leather trim, auto dimming rear view and driver's wing mirror, rain and dusk sensors and folding wing mirrors are standard with the 3.2-litre V6 FSI 250 PS engine.

On top of the high level of standard specification, the Eos will have a substantial options list, enabling customers to create an almost bespoke vehicle. Items will include an amplified, high-quality Dynaudio speaker system, iPod adaptor and USB port for connecting memory sticks carrying MP3 music files.

The Eos will be offered with a choice of five engines: four petrol and one diesel. These include the 1.6-litre FSI 115 PS; 2.0-litre FSI 150 PS; 2.0-litre T-FSI 200 PS; 3.2-litre V6 250 PS; and 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while the 200 PS petrol and the TDI are offered with Volkswagen's innovative DSG automatic gearbox; this 'box is standard with the V6 engine.

Available to order now are the manual versions of the 2.0-litre FSI 150 PS, 2.0-TDI 140 PS, and Sport 2.0-litre T-FSI 200 PS, with other models arriving in autumn.

The Eos made its international debut at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, having been revealed as Concept C at the Geneva Automobile Salon just 18 months earlier. It is the latest in a long line of open-top vehicles from Volkswagen, the first being the Beetle in 1949. The New Beetle Cabriolet will continue to be sold alongside the Eos as a further open-top option from Volkswagen.
VW unveils compact all-wheel drive concept vehicle
Volkswagen has revealed its latest design study, the Concept A, a crossover between a sports car and a compact SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle).

At 4,348 mm long and 1,854 mm wide, Concept A is 144 mm longer and 95 mm wider then the Golf Mk V. The height of Concept A is 1,551 mm, compared with 1,485 for the Golf; while its 2,602 mm wheelbase is 24 mm longer than the Golf's.

The concept combines a sleek coupe-style silhouette with the raised stance of an SUV. At the front, the shield-like front grill which is common to the Passat and Jetta has been developed to emphasise Concept A's off-road styling by forming part of the underbody protection. High-efficiency LED headlights add a further modern touch.

At the rear, Concept A has a practical hatchback tailgate; but this is coupled to a pick-up style fold-down rear section beneath the rear LED light clusters. This hatch can be opened independently and remain open while driving so long loads can be carried.

Concept A does away with the traditional B-pillar. It features opposing opening wing doors which allow easy access for front and rear passengers as well as giving a feeling of space and light. This airy feel is enhanced by Concept A's concertina-style soft-top which slides all the way back to the C-pillar.

Inside are four sculpted, patent leather seats and ultra-modern facia with stylish and ergonomic controls.

Under the bonnet is a 150 PS TSI engine: this uses Volkswagen's latest turbo and supercharger technology for maximum performance but minimum fuel consumption. Designers say alternative engines, including TDI diesel units, could also be used in the concept. Whatever its source, power is distributed via six-speed DSG automatic transmission to all four 20-inch wheels using the 4MOTION system currently employed in the range-topping Passat and Golf R32.

Concept A made its world debut today in Berlin and will be revealed to the public at the Geneva Auto Salon which starts at the end of this month. Production plans for the vehicle have not been confirmed. However, the concept further expands Volkswagen's model range, at a time when customers' needs continue to diversify.
Volkswagen extends Polo range
The Volkswagen Polo line-up has been enhanced with the addition of two new models: the Dune and the range-topping GTI.

The Polo Dune features unique styling, and combines the appearance of a 4x4 with the high quality and compact proportions of the Polo. All models have five doors, while the distinctive exterior additions include: 17 'BBS' alloy wheels; unique front and rear bumpers; side and wheel-arch protection; silver coloured roof rails; and suspension raised by 20 mm.

Available to order February 2006 and officially on sale in the UK on 14 April, the Polo Dune will cost £12,645 on the road for the 1.4-litre 75 PS petrol unit. A 1.4-litre TDI 70 PS diesel is also available, carrying a £850 premium over its petrol counterpart.

The other exciting addition to the Polo range is the GTI model, which will also be open to ordering in February with a market entry date of 12 May.

Available in both three and five door guise, the Polo GTI will be equipped with the proven 1.8-litre 20 valve turbocharged engine. In the new GTI it will develop 150 PS and 220 Nm of torque, making for the most powerful production Polo ever. The GTI will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 8.2 seconds, and reach a top speed of 134 mph.

Style-wise, the Polo GTI takes cues from its 'big brother' Golf GTI and features a honeycomb front grille; twin chrome tail pipes; red brake callipers; 15 mm lower suspension; and 16 inch versions of the GTI alloy wheel. Prices for the Polo GTI start at £14,785 on the road for the three-door model.

Both the Dune and GTI feature a high level of standard equipment including: ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist); driver's and front passenger's airbags; and front side airbags. Other items include Climatic semi-automatic air conditioning, remote central locking with alarm, electric windows and mirrors and a radio/CD player. In addition the Polo GTI gains ESP, Volkswagen's Electronic Stabilisation Programme.

This new Volkswagen, which made its international debut at the 2005 Leipzig Motor Show, will be available to order in the UK from 16 January 2006 .

The Fox is a small car designed to give customers exceptional space in a high-value, high-quality package. At 3.83 metres, it is longer than a Lupo but shorter than a Polo. Within a height of 1.54 metres it can accommodate four large adults, or one cubic metre of luggage with the rear seats folded.

It will be offered with three doors, a choice of two petrol engines - a 1.2-litre 55 PS and a 1.4-litre 75 PS - and two trim levels. The entry level Fox will benefit from power steering, CD player, ABS, twin airbags and the lowest possible insurance rating - 1E.

The Urban Fox - the higher specification model - will benefit from a host of extra equipment and trim, including electric front windows, body coloured bumpers and door mirrors and remote central locking. In Urban Fox specification, the highly competitive insurance rating is 2E.

The Fox harnesses traditional Volkswagen values of low cost of ownership and durability, with a galvanised steel body and extensive use of laser welding. A sliding rear bench seat is standard in the Urban Fox and optional on the Fox - it moves a full 15 cms lengthways and is split 50/50. Surprisingly, the new Volkswagen Fox is larger and lower priced than the Lup o model it replaces.

GX3 was conceived for the U.S. by the Moonraker team and VW's Design Center in California. Three wheels, two seats, and off you go in the carpool lane Wolfsburg / Los Angeles, January 2006. In a world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen presents the GX3 - a completely new type of motorcycle. The GX3 was conceived by the Moonraker team and VW's Design Center in California, exclusively with the U.S. in mind, to bring an exciting idea to a fully functioning concept. With its three wheels and unique design, this Volkswagen opens up a new driving dimension.

What if you could carve up the back roads and cruise solo in the carpool lane?

A motorcycle with VW features:
Light, fast, and environmentally friendly, the GX3 shows that conceptually it is much closer to a motorcycle than to a classic type automobile. This two-seater Volkswagen is one of a kind - bold, young, and affordable. It opens a new driving dimension, turns even the daily commute to work into a small trip to freedom, allows you to cruise in the carpool lane, even if you're driving solo (the GX3 is a motorcycle, after all!) and with its keen handling it opens up completely new horizons for recreational driving.

What if performance were affordable?

Amazing dynamics for less than $ 17,000:
The GX3 will be driven by a VW 1.6 liter engine. The four-cylinder delivers 92 kW / 125 hp. So far, so good. However, the GX3 is a pure driving machine, a motorcycle with two seats positioned side-by-side. And that's why you can find 125 hp and 112.5 ft-lbs (152 Nm) in a mere 1,257 lbs (570 kg) Volkswagen. This results in a power-to- weight ratio of 10 lbs/hp 4.56 kg/PS). In just 5.7 seconds, the GX3 can reach a speed of 62.5 mph (100 km/h) and the possible lateral acceleration reaches 1.25g - values typical of sheer performance cars but delivered from a vehicle under the $17,000 price range. No comparable sports machine in the world, however, can come even close to the low fuel consumption of the GX3: 46 mpg. Fact is: a production counterpart of the GX3, could be on the market very soon. It all depends on the American driver's feedback.

Tradition of the exceptional:
Conceptually and visually the Volkswagen GX3 differs from anything currently on the roads in the U.S. And that's a tradition at Volkswagen. It was with exceptional and unique products - today all of them legends - that Volkswagen propelled itself to the top in the USA during the 50's and 60's. Whether the Beetle, the Thing (Type 181) or the Microbus, all were the cult cars of their time and still are. In 2006, with the GX3, Volkswagen once again presents something totally unexpected and exceptional, a VW in every sense. VW - Being different.

Moonraker:
The GX3 was designed in close collaboration between VW's Design Center California (DCC) and an international, cross-functional group of young engineers, designers, manufacturing and marketing experts, also based in California. The team started its work in the US in early 2005. The job: To convert the wishes, dreams and needs of American drivers into mobility. The goal: highest possible customer satisfaction. Background: In addition to the models developed in Germany and sold in the US, in the future Volkswagen will be building more models catering especially to the needs and requirements of U.S. customers. One of the most dramatic and tangible early results of Moonraker: the GX3. Responsible for the design of the new Volkswagen is the Volkswagen Design Studio in Santa Monica. The team there will be working in the future in close cooperation with the product strategy staffs in the U.S. The GX3 offers a look into the exciting and comprehensive spectrum of totally new motor vehicles which are currently being conceptualized by Volkswagen of America for the US market.

What if authenticity had a radical edge?

Design dynamics:
The focus for Volkswagen's design team in California was to create a quintessential and pure driving machine. Inspired by the minimalist design language often expressed in contemporary GP motorcycles and F1 race cars, the GX3 has a true feeling of authenticity. These influences are seen throughout the exterior with an exposed single sided swing arm, aggressive central exhaust, open front wheels and stealthy matte finishes. The progressive dynamic on the GX3 is emphasized with a strong graphic dividing the body as it wraps up to the aggressive forward leaning roll hoops. Anodized gold and black suspension components and LED lighting are further examples of track inspired designs. The GX3 interior is all about business with nothing to distract from the absolute driving experience. The driver's cockpit is equipped with five point racing harnesses; moto style instruments and a GTI inspired stainless shifter. Most distinctly, the rear boasts a massive single 18x12 back wheel dressed with 315 rubber. The front end proudly displays a bold V graphic consistent with Volkswagen's vehicle lineup, most notably the GTI. The GX3 in no way denies that it is a motorcycle, but rather plays it up as a unique design advantage.

Space-Frame:
The basic structure of this driving machine is formed by a high-density, warp-resistant, steel construction space frame. The paneling of the interior and exterior parts of the space frame is made of high density fiberglass. A 2.83 tf3 (80 l) trunk is located behind the seats.

What if driving was redefined?

Advanced chassis:
The 215/45 R17x8J front wheels are controlled by a double lateral steering axle. While the front axle resembles the layout of an automobile, the rear axle shows more parallels to a motorcycle. The right side of the vehicle also makes use of a monoswing arm. The engine's power is delivered via 6-speed transmission and chain drive to the rear wheel, which has a tire size of 315/30 R18x12J - a new super bike dimension. And that suits the GX3. A Volkswagen that breaks away from the conventions and that redefines driving fun and freedom of mobility. Drivers wanted. Seriously!

Volkswagen back in first place in Europe
Wolfsburg 23 December 2005 Å Volkswagen is back in first place in Europe. Measured by the number of new vehicle registrations, the brand has regained first place in 2005. Volkswagen is a powerful brand. We are now harvesting the rewards of our model offensive, claimed Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand in Wolfsburg. Our models are exciting customers across Europe. That gives us a tailwind for the year ahead, Bernhard stressed.

Between January and November, the European Automobile Association (ACEA) noted 1.416 million new vehicle registrations for the Volkswagen brand in Europe (EU 23 + EFTA). That is a lead that the competition will not be able to catch up in the last month of the year, said Bernhard. In November alone, 129,000 vehicles of the brand were registered. That gives Volkswagen a market share of 11.1 percent in November, some 1.7 percentage points more than the second place.

By far the most successful model in Europe is the Volkswagen Golf. Between January and the end of October, almost 500,000 Golf registrations were recorded. This year, the Golf has really gained momentum and has left the competition a long way behind, stressed Bernhard. The launch of the Golf Plus has played an important role in this development. This success shows that our innovative ideas and concepts enable us to expand and grow, even in the highly competitive compact car segment.

The other models launched in 2005 have also quickly become established on the market. Besides the Golf Plus, Volkswagen also launched the new Polo, the new Fox, the new Passat saloon, the new Jetta, the new Beetle and the new Beetle convertible, the new Passat estate and the Golf R32. In addition, Volkswagen presented the new Eos at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt and at the EcoRacer at the Tokyo Motor Show.

We have a fresh new model range, explained Bernhard. But this success will not cause us to sit back on our laurels. We have more surprises is store for 2006. We shall prove that Volkswagen is able to produce vehicles that people dream about and to do so at competitive prices. Our heart is in the high-volume segment.
Jetta prices confirmed
Pricing and specification for the new Volkswagen Jetta have been confirmed, ahead of its UK launch on 3 February 2006. Prices start at £14,635 (RRP on the road) for the entry-level model - the Jetta S FSI 1.6-litre 115 PS.

The Jetta replaces the Bora, and signals the revival of the Jetta name in Europe. By introducing a worldwide, uniform name for its compact saloon, Volkswagen decided to adopt the one already used in the USA, where the Jetta is not only the company's best-selling car, but also the top-selling European car outright.

Standard specification includes: alloy wheels; climatic air-conditioning; front and rear electric windows; speed sensitive power steering; rain sensors; LED rear lights; and a complete range of EU4 compliant engines.

The new Jetta features a host of safety functions on all models. ABS with BAS (Brake Assist System) and EBD (Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution), driver and front passenger airbags, curtain airbag system, ESP including EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) and ASR (Traction Control) are all standard features across the range.

The Jetta will be offered to UK customers with a choice of five engines from launch - three petrol and two diesel. These comprise a 1.6-litre FSI 115 PS; 2.0-litre FSI 150 PS; 2.0-litre T-FSI 200 PS (as seen in the Golf GTI); 1.9-litre TDI 105 PS; and a 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS. Both diesel engines will be available with Volkswagen's pioneering DSG automatic gearbox. As with other recent Volkswagens, the Jetta will feature multi-link rear suspension and electro-mechanical power steering for appealing dynamic characteristics.

Volkswagen's advanced DSG automatic gearbox will be optional on TDI and 2.0-litre

T-FSI models with six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission as an option on 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre 200 PS FSI models.

The Jetta's most prominent design feature is its distinctive chrome grille, which continues a theme already seen on the Golf R32 and new Passat. The rear end also reflects current Volkswagen design themes, and features dependable LED lights.

The Jetta is larger than the Bora it replaces, giving improved interior space. At 4.54 m long, it has grown by 17.8 cm; width has increased by 4.6 cm to 1.76 m; height has increased by 1.3 cm to 1.46 m; and wheelbase has increased by 5.9 cm to 2.58 m. The luggage area has also increased offering 527 litres of space - a 72 litre improvement.

More than 6.6 million Jetta models have been sold to date, and the latest model is expected to continue this success. The Jetta is available to order now, ahead of its

New commercial vehicle announcement
Volkswagen today announces the new replacement for its highly successful LT model, the Volkswagen Crafter.

The new Crafter completes the renewal of the entire Volkswagen light commercial vehicle range. This began with the new Transporter in 2003 followed by the new Caddy which has helped total sales of Volkswagen commercial vehicles to rise from 16478 in 2002 to a forecast 23380 for 2005, a growth of 41 per cent.

Four versions of Volkswagen's fuel efficient, five cylinder TDI engine are available delivering 89 PS, 109 PS, 136 PS and 164 PS. The new unit is now equipped with common rail fuel injection and a diesel particulate filter combining durability, low fuel consumption and low emissions with a wide choice of power outputs.

The Crafter is equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard - an automatic transmission will be optional. The generously sized braking system has considerable reserve capacity even at maximum vehicle weight. Optimised suspension gives the vehicle good cornering stability, and for additional safety, the Crafter is fitted with ESP and ABS as standard.

The ergonomically designed cabin includes a driver's airbag as standard, while front passenger, curtain and side airbags are available as options. For added convenience, remote central locking and electric windows are also standard. A dash-mounted gearlever offers increased comfort, and also releases more cabin space. Continuing the space theme, provision has also been made for the storage of many items that van drivers often need to accommodate.

A choice of three wheelbases, four load compartment lengths and three roof heights enhance the versatility of the new model. The Crafter has a maximum load capacity of 17 m³ and the 5-tonne panel van can now transport a weight of approximately 2,670 kg. There is ample width inside the vehicle for two Euro pallets to stand next to each other. This is complemented by superior load compartment access - in vehicles with the medium or long wheelbase, a sliding door reveals a loading aperture 1.3 m in width and 1.8 m in height, allowing Euro pallets to be loaded easily. An optional transport safety system can be used to restrain loads.

The Crafter has been designed to be visually more striking than its predecessor. Strong lines, vertical clear glass headlights and robust side protection strips characterise the modern design, giving the Crafter a distinctive appearance.

Sales are expected to start in the UK during September 2006 following a world public launch at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham during April 2006, to open a new chapter in the 30-year history of the LT.
VW reveals Polo Dune
The new addition to the Polo range combines the appeal of a 4x4's appearance, with the agile handling, high quality and compact proportions for which Volkswagen's supermini is renowned.

The Dune's distinctive appearance is due to its specific styling, which includes: 17 'BBS' alloy wheels; unique front and rear bumpers; side and wheel-arch protection; and silver-coloured roof rails and door mirrors, with integrated indicators. Available in 5-door guise only, the Dune has raised suspension as standard, enabling better visibility and ease of access.

Individual styling continues inside the Dune, with chrome-plated instrument surrounds, aluminium-look pedals, front sports seats, and a leather trimmed steering wheel and handbrake grip.

Featuring a high level of standard specification, the Dune's comprehensive list of equipment includes: semi-automatic climatic control; electric windows, front and rear; multifunction computer; radio/MP3 compatible CD player; front fog lights; and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors.

The Polo Dune will be available with a choice of two established Euro 4-compliant Volkswagen engines, a 1.4-litre 75 PS petrol unit, or a 1.4-litre 70 PS diesel, which features unit injector technology and variable geometry turbocharging.

The Polo is one of the safest cars in its sector, and the Dune is no exception. Every Polo Dune has ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist), driver's and front passenger's airbags, front side airbags and a flat-tyre indicator fitted as standard.

UK pricing will be confirmed nearer to the new model's UK launch in spring 2006, but is anticipated to start at approximately £12,645 on the road.

VW gears up for Dakar
In so doing become the first manufacturer to take victory with a diesel-powered car.

When the flag falls in Lisbon on 31 December to mark the start of the two-week trans-Africa marathon, no fewer than five TDI-powered Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 challengers will be in the field.

And Volkswagen has assembled a driving squad of unrivalled experience and talent, led by double World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz and featuring newly crowned FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup Champion Bruno Saby and also the first and only woman to win the Dakar Rally, Jutta Kleinschmidt.

It's the culmination of a two-year programme to secure victory in rallying's greatest event. Volkswagen Motorsport director Kris Nissen believes the team is ready: 'Since last year's Dakar Rally we have been preparing intensively. The focal areas are engineering, logistics and the team, and in all of these we have achieved improvements.

'The Dakar is a unique competition in every respect, and it makes the maximum demands on both people and the machine, and over an unusually long period of time at that. Our extensive tests have prepared us for these demands.'

The Race Touareg was introduced to competition in 2004 and was immediately competitive, in Kleinschmidt's hands winning a stage of the Dakar Rally and claiming its maiden podium finish, on the Rallye d'Orient.

This season Volkswagen has mopped up in the world of marathon rallying, Frenchman Saby piloting his Race Touareg to victory on Argentina's Por Las Pampas Rally before leading home an historic Volkswagen 1-2-3 on the Moroccan Rally and also a 1-2 on Turkey's Rallye d'Orient. Little wonder that Saby clinched the World Cup crown with two events in hand.

There was success also for the Race Touareg on the 2005 Dakar Rally, with Germany's Kleinschmidt taking third place overall to give Volkswagen the first-ever Dakar podium finish by a diesel-powered car.

Now there is a new Volkswagen rally weapon, the Race Touareg 2, which enjoyed a competitive maiden outing on last month's Rallye Baja Portalegre; Kleinschmidt took second in Portugal, Sainz third on his Volkswagen debut and Saby fourth.

The new car is 200 mm shorter than its predecessor yet has an increased wheelbase to help improve rough-terrain handling and allow the crew greater cockpit space. The machine's centre of gravity has also been lowered and visibility from the cockpit enhanced.

Under the bonnet, the proven five-cylinder TDI power unit has been reworked in many areas, boosting power to approximately 275 PS and torque to in excess of 550 Nm. There is a revised dry sump lubrication system and a new, two-stage turbocharging system, as well as improved engine management.

Sainz was impressed with the car's performance in Portugal: 'Clinching a podium place on my debut in the Volkswagen team, and also in my first marathon rally event, was very good. I took two stage victories and learned a lot about this sport,' said the 43-year-old Spaniard who, with 26 event victories, is the most successful driver in the history of the World Rally Championship.

Lining up alongside Sainz, Kleinschmidt and 1993 Dakar victor Saby in the Volkswagen team are South African Giniel de Villiers, 33, who is a four-time South African touring car champion and a top-seven Dakar finisher for the last three years; and also experienced American off-road racer Mark Miller, 43.

There are three women in the squad: Kleinschmidt's co-driver is the Italian Fabrizia Pons, who used to partner Audi rally legend Michel Mouton. Sitting alongside de Villiers will be Sweden's Tina Thorner.

The exact route of the Dakar Rally for 2006 is due to be revealed later this month. It's expected to cover a total distance in excess of 9000 km and will lead competitors from Portugal through Spain to Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Guinea before the finish in Senegal on 15 January.

Volkswagen has launched a new website which will feature live reporting of the Dakar Rally as well as background features and downloadable goodies. It can be found at www.volkswagen-motorsport.com

24 millionth VW Golf rolls off line
This coincides with a production milestone reached at Volkswagen in Wolfsburg, Germany, where the 24 millionth Golf rolled off the production line.

The anniversary model was a Golf Comfortline 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS in tornado red. Volkswagen Production Board member Reinhard Jung commented: 'The Golf is top of the registrations list in Western Europe and the best-selling vehicle in the Volkswagen Group.'

The model's success story began with production in 1974. By 2002 Golf production figures surpassed Beetle production, setting a new record at Volkswagen. In total, over 719,000 Golf models were delivered to customers worldwide last year, and the car is consistently ranked as the best selling vehicle in Western Europe.

The Mk V Golf range has been strengthened even further this year with the launch of the new Golf R32. The R32 has been eagerly awaited in the UK, its predecessor - the original Golf R32, based on the Mk IV Golf - outperformed all sales expectations, with over 2,300 sold in the UK alone, and the new generation is expected to follow this success.

The R32 has the highest standard specification of any model in the Golf range, and includes 18 alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, as well as 2Zone Climatronic air conditioning, a ten-speaker audio system and rain sensor wipers with auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Powered by a 3.2-litre V6 250 PS petrol engine, the R32 features 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard. Prices start from £23,745 for the 3 door version with a manual gearbox, rising to £25,575 for the 5 door DSG model. Full details can be found on the dedicated website: www.newgolfr32.co.uk.

Passat line-up adds 3.2-litre engine
Available now to order, the most powerful engine in the range is coupled with the 6-speed DSG gearbox and features the 4MOTION four-wheel drive system as standard.

The 3189 cc FSI engine features innovative direct injection technology, where the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber under high pressure, resulting in impressive power and economy even at low revs. With the 3.2-litre V6 engine, the Passat accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds in the saloon, and 7.2 seconds in the estate, to reach a top speed of 153 mph and 151 mph respectively.

The new models are available in Sport and SEL trim levels, and receive additional items of standard specification, including 17 alloy wheels and a tyre pressure monitor. Chrome-plated roof rails and stainless steel load sill protection are fitted as standard on the Passat Estate Sport model, while the SEL models, on both the saloon and estate, feature a full size alloy spare wheel.

Volkswagon reveals the California
With a rich heritage in recreational vehicles, Volkswagen has announced the new Caravelle-based California, which is now available.

The new California is special in being a full factory-designed product benefiting from the same expertise as every Volkswagen product down to the last detail. Light alloy chairs, table and awning even borrow from aero-industry design practice, incorporating light weight and ingenuity of stowage. Entry level recreational fun from Volkswagen can be had from £34,000.

Equipped with Volkswagen's 5-cylinder 2.5-litre TDI PD engine in either

130 PS or 174 PS form, the California is economical, powerful and environmentally friendly. All models meet Euro 4 emissions standard.

Two sleeping areas are available, one in the main body of the vehicle and one in a 'private' roof area, accessible via an electro-hydraulic raising mechanism.

Equipment includes a 42-litre fridge with -18°C capability, a 30-litre fresh water container (with submersible pump); twin-gas burners; radio/cassette system with six-disc CD changer and eight-speakers; parking and auxiliary heaters with remote control; two folding chairs (stored within the tailgate) multiple storage cupboards with drawers and double glazing for the living area.

A full range of options includes European-wide satellite navigation, Climatronic air conditioning in the front and/or rear of the vehicle, removable towbar and a 250 cm wide side-mounted awning.

All vehicles are equipped with anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control (TCS), engine braking control (EBC) and electronic stabilisation programme (ESP). For those who appreciate extra traction, Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is also available as an option.

The California enjoys the high standard of build quality found in all Volkswagen passenger and commercial vehicles. Should the unlikely happen, the manufacturer-backed 60,000 miles/three year warranty will provide additional assurance. This becomes the only recreational vehicle of its type available officially in the UK with full European Whole Vehicle Type Approval.
